While bullshitting with a friend about nothing I accidentally came up with a comic book setting I rather enjoy the thought of.
Victorian England only we have a more modern political structure working at things, lots of supernatural bits floating about for whatever reason. We opened by discussing a villain named “Steakman” and he needed a good guy to fight so who better then The Fang Gang a group of vigilante vampires. Then we went further, I mean a place where a gang of vampires is the positive is a fucked up place, so the government was the next step. Cthulhu being a political lobbyist giving funding to Jack the Ripper in his Campaign for Prime Minister (Jack was a grassroots murder party candidate lured into working for the big interests). Cthulhu has to work behind the scenes a bit since the sight of him still drives mortals insane, ho hum. Jack is currently running against a incumbent immortality granted person in the vein of Job, call him a parallel person to Job. I can’t decide if he has decided all things are part of gods plan and he is feeling beatific and thus is the most useless prime minister ever but he is just so gosh darn charismatic, or if he should be jaded, perpecutually suffering and hating god for making him suffer these thousands of years and the most ruthless cutthroat PM. In either case it makes for a nasty government situation and the landscape is littered with unsavory magical elements and some form of Sherlock Homes dropped into the mix wouldn’t be unreasonable. Unsure how else to paint this world of heros, villains and gods. I have it all very gritty minded but don’t know what other details would need to be fleshed out for my mental world. Cthulhu as a political force because he wishes to end the world and rest seems reasonable, his party pushing hard for progress scientifically so we’re better able to do so. Yaweh just another god in the pot in this world I guess. Doesn’t need to be made completely clear, god knows most books don’t make it clear how that shit works. If this setting was to be used like every other urban fantasy work that is set in the past, it would almost certainly open on a “regular joe” with a 9 to 5 job doing some menial task related to the nature of the world, be it magical mechanic, or animal control, whatever. He tends to have a dark past, soldier in a war, prisoner, or gang member. He is just going about that day to day when he stumbles into something a little weird, thinks little of it, conspiracy, Jacks party also has backing from the Job-like who wants to world to end so he can stop suffering, averted current major whatever (Cthulhus family reunion, worldsoul shatter, exploding carpets from the middle east, whatever bullshit) and gets the girl that served basically no purpose whatsoever. Somewhere in there he meets with the Fang Gang and is nervous but is shown to be prejudiced because they’re the good guys. Bam, rough plot outline for a urban fantasy novel set in the past, that I will never ever use because I am super duper lazy. I guess if I was to do comic format I would have to come from a slightly different angle. I think follow the sherlock for a while, letting him solve crimes that most go to serve to flesh out the world, let people get invested, drop an arc of backstory with an issue for a major players each, go back into that overarcing story from the novel sum-up just re-angled for detective instead of everyman. I’m thinking this might be a good setting to drop a slightly modified old joke comic char, Captain Necksnap. Seems a good world for him.
